William “Bill” Gordon Slack, Jr., age 78 of Globe, Arizona, passed away at home on September 18, 2012. Gordon was born in Detroit Michigan to William G. Slack, Sr. and Margaret Kelly Brogan Slack. The family moved to Miami, AZ. From an early age Gordon and his sisters worked in the family’s restaurant named “Peggy’s Sandwich Shop”, they were famous for their hamburgers and chili. Gordon attended the Arizona State Teachers College right out of graduating from Miami High School. He was drafted to serve in Company “C” 224th Infantry Regiment in the Korean War. Upon his return from service in 1955 he met his life long dance partner Sylvia Rodriguez. They dated for three years while Gordon attended the University of Arizona. Gordon and Sylvia were married on September 13, 1958. Gordon graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Mining Engineer in May 1959. During his college education years “Bill” worked for Superior’s Magma Mine, the Miami Inspiration Mine, the San Manuel Mine and Copper Cities/Sleeping Beauty Mine. After graduating from the university he worked for Inspiration Christmas Mine. Bill was then hired to help to establish the Pinto Valley Unit where he was assigned the task of Concentrator Superintendent. He later retired from Pinto Valley in September 1990. During his Retirement years Bill and Sylvia enjoyed attending their grandchildren’s athletic activities. At one point in time; many of the Globe High School Athletes had enjoyed one of Gram and Papa Slack’s well-known Bean Burro Lunches. They followed the Tiger’s no matter the distance to the opposing team’s location. Bill enjoyed Photography and Gardening. He enjoyed the many faces of all of his subjects. He developed patience to capture the special moments with his photography and patience to cultivate his rate plants. Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years Sylvia Rodriguez Slack. Children Cynthia “Cindy” Burdette of Globe, AZ; Dorothy “Dotty” (Steve) York, Globe, AZ; Sylvia Jane “Janie” Slack, Mesa, AZ; Tina (Alex) Gonzales, Globe, AZ; Susan “Susie” Slack, Henderson, NV; Margaret “Peggy” (Brian) Valencia, Globe, AZ; William Gordon “Gordy” Slack, III, Globe, AZ; Stephen York, Mesa, AZ 13 grandchildren and 12 Great grandchildren. He is also survived, by his sisters, Patricia “Patsy” Hughes, Tucson, AZ, Mary Margaret (Edmundo) Salazar, Hermosillo, Mexico, Catherine Swanberg Vancouver, WA and Theresa Eisenberg, Peoria, AZ During their many years together, Sylvia and Bill attended many celebrations with their comadres enjoying the music and dancing the night away. Throughout Bill’s life it has been recognized that he held “God First.” The love of his wife has been perfected. The love of his family is a beautiful result of this perfection. Their legacy is to pass on his incredibly strong work ethics, patience, generosity, and his steadfast faith in God. Memorial services will be held on Friday, September 28, 2012 at Holy Angels Catholic Church with Rosary starting at 9:30 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. Burial of ashes will follow at Globe Cemetery.
