Douglas Lionel Ayres, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, departed this life on May 9, 2025, in Globe, Arizona, at the age of 76. Born on August 13, 1948, in Fargo, North Dakota, Doug dedicated over 30 years of his life to the mining industry, working diligently at Freeport Mine before retiring. Though his profession was a source of pride, it was his unfulfilled dream to become a teacher that spoke volumes about his character and passions.
A man of great intellect, Doug instilled a love for knowledge in those around him. He often recalled how his desire to teach was always at the forefront of his mind, and this yearning manifested in the myriads of lessons he shared with his children. Through his guidance, they embraced the experiences that shaped their lives, proving that the essence of a good education goes beyond the classroom.
Doug was a voracious reader, a passion evident in the countless books that filled his home. He was a fast reader, always trading in old volumes for fresh stories that fueled his imagination. His unfettered love for pets, including dogs and cats, painted his world with joy as he lavished them with affection, ensuring they were spoiled as dearly as he cherished them.
An ardent sports fan, he wore his affiliations proudly. Doug cheered passionately for the Diamondbacks, Phoenix Suns, Arizona Cardinals, and, with unwavering loyalty, the Green Bay Packers. His heart soared during game days, a tradition that brought together family and friends alike, turning his living room into a vibrant hub of excitement and camaraderie.
Beyond his interests, those who knew Doug appreciated his quick wit and remarkable intelligence. He had a knack for Jeopardy, often boasting the answers before the contestants could register the questions. His humor was infectious, as he found joy in a good laugh, and his caring nature revealed a softer side that grew even more profound with age.
In his earlier days, Doug enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting, reveling in the great outdoors. After retirement, his adventurous spirit found new outlets as he frequented the slot machines at Apache Gold Casino. Daily newspapers became his cherished companion; one he perused thoroughly from front to back. Road trips became treasured memories as he drove his family on vacations, shaping their shared experiences with each adventure.
Doug is survived by his loving wife, Cindy Marie Ayres; his son, Daniel (Nadya) Ayres; his daughter, Viviana Armstrong; and five cherished grandchildren; Joshua, Dominique, Lionel, Landon and Maximo. He is also survived by his dear sisters, Kay (John) Krattli and Anne (Ben) Gearheart, along with his brother, Alan (Ann) Ayres along with many nieces and nephews that will miss him dearly.
He was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Elizabeth Ayres, and his brother, Chris Ayres.
As we remember Douglas Lionel Ayres, let us hold dear the legacy of love, laughter, and learning he imparted to all of us. He will be profoundly missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those whose lives he touched.
