Eugene “Gene” Neil Hazen, age 92, was born on March 29, 1933, to Neil and Frances Hazen. He grew up on a farm and attended a country schoolhouse in Wellfleet, Nebraska, where he learned the value of hard work at an early age while helping maintain the family farm.
Gene later enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he met the love of his life, Katherine Marlene Brandt. They were married in 1955 and spent their honeymoon driving to Globe, Arizona—a place that would become home. Gene began working in the local copper mines, where he dedicated 25 years of service before retiring at the age of 51.
Gene and Marlene were blessed with two beautiful daughters: Kathy, born in 1956, and Linda, born in 1958.
A hardworking man with a generous heart, Gene truly enjoyed life alongside his family and friends. He loved all animals, but especially his horses, which remained a passion and source of purpose throughout his life. He proudly passed that love of horses on to his daughters and eventually his grandkids.
Together, Gene and Marlene established the first 4-H horse club, the Copper Spurs, and later founded G&M Riding Stables—through their stables, they offered horseback rides throughout Gila County and beyond. Gene’s barn became a gathering place filled with laughter, conversation, steak fries, potlucks, and friendships—welcoming both new riders and seasoned horsemen. Many of those friendships endure to this day.
Above all else, Gene was the best grandfather in the world. No matter how busy he was, he always made time for his grandchildren. Whether it was sharing stories, offering quiet guidance, lending a helping hand, or simply being present, his grandkids always knew they were loved, supported, and valued. His patience, kindness, and steady presence created memories that will be treasured for generations.
Gene was deeply involved in his community and served on numerous committees, including the Elks’ Lodge, Gila County Sheriff’s Posse, Arizonac Junior Rodeo Club, and the Copper Dust Stampede Pro Rodeo. While he held many leadership roles, he was best known as chairman of the dances. Gene and Marlene shared a true love for dancing, and wherever there was a dance, they were sure to be there.
Gene passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 15, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Neil and Frances Hazen; his sister, Maxine (Ray); his brothers, Lyle (Liz), Dale (Donna), and Keith (Deloras); his daughter, Kathy; his granddaughter, Amber Lyn; and his grandson, Neil Clark.
He is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Marlene Hazen; his daughter, Linda Hazen; his grandchildren, Michael Oddonetto (Kimberly), Brian Oddonetto (Tracey), Lyndi Oddonetto (Jeremiah), and Kati Oddonetto; his great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Taylor, Brandon, Coben (Samantha), Alli, Redley, Oliver, and Alora; and his great-great-granddaughter, Lennon —five generations strong!
Gene was loved by all who knew him and will be deeply missed.
At Gene’s request, a private service will be held by family and a celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
