Max Steele
July 3, 1940 – June 28, 2025
Max Steele, 84, passed away peacefully at the San Carlos Apache Healthcare Corporation in Peridot, Arizona. Born on July 3, 1940, in Whiteriver, Arizona to Ella Hopkins and Reeves Steele. Max was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose strength and deep love for his family touched many lives.
Max was a proud graduate of East Fork Mission High School in Whiteriver, Arizona. After high school he went on to finish his training from Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas. He worked for over 30 years as a shovel operator in the Pinto Valley and Morenci copper mines, until his retirement in 2002.
He was married to his loving wife, Catherine Steele, and together they raised four children: Manuel Steele, Natalie Stevens (Tim), Cathleen Howard (Robert), and Mark Steele (Lisha). Max was a proud grandfather to Kristin Stevens, Catherine Ustariz, Alexis Ustariz, Kirt Stevens, Megan Howard, Benjamin Howard, John Howard, and Derrick Smith. He also leaves behind one cherished great-grandson, Matthew May. Max had a deep love for the outdoors and spent many joyful hours hunting and fishing. He was also an avid football fan who rarely missed a game. He will be remembered for his wisdom, kindness as well as his humor.
Arrangements for a one-day service has been made on Saturday, July 5th , 2025. Viewing will begin at 6 AM at the Steele residence on Peridot Siding Road. Funeral services will follow at 10 AM at the Peridot Lutheran Church. Max will be laid to rest at Upper Peridot Cemetery. A reception will take place at the Michael Noline Activity Center in Peridot following the services. Max’s life was one of humility, dedication, and love. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
