Richard “Rick” Tomerlin, 76, of Miami Gardens, passed away peacefully at his home. In many ways, it was fitting for a man who had always lived life on his own terms—independent, tough, a little stubborn, and never one to complain.
Rick was born in Miami, Arizona, to Leon and Dorothy Tomerlin and always considered Miami Gardens home, no matter where life took him. He grew up running the hills, playing tennis and basketball at the Miami Gardens court, and causing his share of mischief. At Miami High School, he played football and basketball, ran track, and graduated in 1969.
Shortly after graduation, Rick joined the U.S. Army and honorably served in Vietnam with C Company, 101st Aviation Battalion. Although he saw the harsh realities of war, he rarely spoke of his experiences and never complained. He returned home and went to work, spending the next 40 years as a union carpenter for a variety of companies and in many places, while always calling Miami home.
A maverick in his own way, Rick was quick-witted, funny, and always ready for a good time, a beer, or a friendly bet. To the astonishment of his young nieces and nephew, he once came home with a colt he had won in a poker game. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, camping, snow and water skiing, and simply spending time with family and friends. Rick was never one for sentimental words and could sometimes be gruff, but beneath it all was a tender heart.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Dorothy Tomerlin, and his older brother, Ralph Tomerlin. He is survived by his sons, Donald (Alesha) Tomerlin and Jay (Lisa) Tomerlin; grandchildren, Christopher and Sereya Tomerlin; younger brother, Randy (Beverly) Tomerlin; sister, Janet (Brian) Mullaney; and many nieces and nephews.
